چکیده
192 LLE Review, Volume 68 A principal component of smoothing by spectral dispersion (SSD) is an electro-optic phase modulator that produces a cyclic wavelength modulation on nanosecond laser pulses. This article addresses the theory, design, manufacture, testing, and implementation of microwave phase modulators operating in the gigahertz-frequency range with particular application to both oneand two-dimensional SSD on the OMEGA laser system.

LLE Review, Volume 78 53 High laser-irradiation uniformity is an important requirement for successful direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Direct-drive laser-irradiation uniformity is achieved on OMEGA for different ranges of spatial frequencies using smoothing by spectral dispersion (SSD), polarization smoothing with distributed polarization rotators (DPR’s), and multiple-beam overl...

A scheme for photonic generation of pulsed microwave signals with tunable frequency and phase based on optical spectral-shaping and frequency-to-time mapping is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The spectral shaping is realized by a tunable optical comb filter consisting of a differential group delay (DGD) element, a polarization modulator (PolM), and a polarizer. By passing a short opt...

We demonstrate a novel method for spectral analysis of microwave signals that employs time-domain processing in fiber. We use anomalous dispersion in single-mode fiber to perform a Fresnel transform followed by a matched amount of dispersion-compensating fiber to perform an inverse Fresnel transform of an ultrashort pulse. After the Fresnel-transformed waveform is modulated by the microwave sig...
